KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two men were shot to death Wednesday night in Parkville after a dispute over a firewood transaction.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. along Missouri Highway 9 near Coffey Road in Parkville, according to the Parkville Police Chief Kevin Chrisman.

The incident began at a house in unincorporated Platte County, where the two victims met to discuss a firewood sale.

Chrisman said the men and a juvenile left in their truck hauling a trailer loaded with firewood. The suspect followed them in a car.

When both vehicles then stopped on the shoulder of the two-lane highway, the suspect got out of his car and fired a handgun at the truck, hitting both men.

One died at the scene and the second man was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The juvenile wasn't hurt, Chrisman said.

Tuesday, Parkville police identified the victims as 34-year-old Kalob Lawson of Kimberling City, Missouri, and 44-year-old Jonathan Lutz of Kansas City, Missouri.

The suspect drove home, called police and was arrested.

The suspect is being held in the Platte County jail while Parkville police investigate. They have not been formally charged.

The highway between Park University and Coffey Road was closed as officers investigated the shooting, according to the Platte County Sheriff's Office.

These are the second and third homicides in Parkville since November 2019.
