2 men charged in connection to February Westport shooting

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two men face charges in a shooting in Westport that left one man dead and wounded four others.

Christien Woody, 21, and Lavont Carter, 19, were charged in Jackson County Court with second degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon in connection to the Feb. 29 shooting on Mill Street.

Court documents state that an off-duty Kansas City, Missouri, police officer saw occupants of a white SUV shooting at people along the street.

The gunfire killed Devin Harris, 17, and wounded four others.

Lavont Carter's brother, Devon, told police 30 family and friends gathered at a Westport club for a birthday party.

The group left the nightclub and some in the party got into an argument with another group of people. The argument began over the driver of a car nearly hitting a drunk woman in the street, court documents state.

The people in the car parked in a garage and walked along Mill Street.

A man in the SUV leaned out of a passenger window and fired at the people on Mill Street.

A second gunman fired from the open sun roof of the SUV.

Devon Carter admitted to driving the white SUV.

Carter's brother, Lavon, is known to Kansas City, Kansas, police for his suspected involvement in a several crimes.
