KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Four Kansas City, Missouri, police officers helped a scary situation come to a happy end for a boy in the crowd at the Chiefs Kingdom Champions Parade.
A man who tested positive for amphetamine and cocaine drove through parade barriers near Front Street and Riverfront Road, prompting a chase down the route.
At times, speeds reached 60 miles per hour, according to charging documents.
In a public post on Facebook, Amanda Brown said the chase ended directly in front of where she and her family stood behind the barricade.
Several officers drew their weapons as the vehicle finally came to a stop and told the crowd to “get down,” according to Brown’s post.
Her son had been playing on his Nintendo Switch when the commotion broke out, Brown wrote, and in the scramble to get back, it was trampled and broken.
Brown said officers checked on the crowd to make sure everyone was OK, and saw that her son was crying.
When the situation settled down, Brown said four officers made their way back to her family for a special reason.
“After the hustle and bustle simmered, 4 of the Kansas City Missouri Police Department made their way back to find us, and gave him some money to help replace his Switch!” Brown wrote.
In her post, Brown said she was grateful for the officers’ effort.
“Those officers literally just saved us and thousands of others whom could have been seriously hurt, and they went out of their way and took money out of their own pockets to try and make the scary situation end happily,” Brown wrote.
KCPD Chief Rick Smith commended the officers’ actions at a Thursday press conference.
“I thought that was really nice of our officers to go over about what happened,” Smith said. “The kid was down there on his hands and knees crying, and they came over and took care of them.”
“Even after all this, our officers were right there,” Smith added.
