KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers in the U.S., which is why the American Heart Association – Kansas City is working to increase funds and awareness of these issues.

One of the organization’s biggest events is the 5K Heart Walk. The event, like many amid the coronavirus pandemic, turned virtual this year.

41 Action News is the official media partner of 5K Heart Walk and supports the association in its fight against COVID-19 and its efforts to protect more people from heart disease and strokes.

Anchor Kevin Holmes emceed this year’s event.

The event is near and dear to the family of 4-year-old LeGend Taliferro, who was shot and killed as he slept in his bed earlier this year. The KC Heart Walk was his favorite event every year.

LeGend was recognized as a heart survivor during the 2018 Heart Walk, having undergone multiple surgeries during his life. His family participated by walking around a track and wearing shirts to honor LeGend.

There’s still time to participate. Organizers have asked runners and walkers to post pictures and videos of themselves, using the hashtag KCHEARTWALK, to promote heart health.

More information can be found on the American Heart Association website.
