KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Amtrak service between Kansas City, Missouri, and St. Louis has been temporarily suspended, Amtrak said Tuesday night.

Due to historic flooding across the Midwest, there has been an increase in freight train volume being diverted to the Union Pacific Railroad route, which runs between Kansas City and St. Louis, according to Amtrak.

The company said chartered buses will cover the Amtrak route through Sunday. The buses will match the train's schedule as closely as possible, but travelers should expect delays.

Amtrak advised riders to check their train status online or on their app before leaving, and allow themselves extra time to get to the station.

Amtrak said customers on trains with modified schedules are usually compensated with a ride on a train with a similar schedule, departing the same or next day. Fees for reservation changes will be waived for affected customers who seek to modify their itinerary.

Alternatively, travelers can find information about refunds on Amtrak.com.
