KANSAS CITY, Mo. — More than 200 rats and other animals are slowly going up for adoption at KC Pet Project.

This all started on Monday when those animals were removed from a home on Wabash Avenue.

Along with the rats, rabbits, geckos and guinea pigs also were rescued.

The animals are all in good condition, according to KC Pet Project. A few do have injuries and are being watched closely by the shelter.

KC Pet Project said they have never seen anything like this before.

"We had a chinchilla case a few years ago with 28 chinchillas," said Tori Fugate, KC Pet Project spokesperson. "That doesn't even compare with what we are dealing with. We will be adopting rats for a long time and we are very thankful we have had so many people in the community step up to help."

More than 50 animals have been placed in foster homes since Monday. Twenty-five rats have been adopted and more were made available Saturday.

Rabbits, guinea pigs and geckos also are available at the shelter. Some of the rabbits are not adoptable yet, due to being spayed and neutered. The turtles have placement.

The shelter said they will have rats available for quite some time.

"Rats are $10 dollarsfor the first and $5 for everyone after that," Fugate said. "They have to go out in least in pairs. We can adopt out more than two. They have to be the same gender. We are not going to spay and neuter the rats, it's just too delicate of a procedure."
