KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The name Mahomes has brought Kansas City back to life in so many different ways.
While Patrick Mahomes, the reigning NFL MVP, has led the Chiefs to another AFC Championship game, his mother, Randi Mahomes, is giving another organization in the city hope.
On Facebook, Randi posted a fundraiser for her birthday, asking for donations to Variety Children's Charity of Greater Kansas City.
The post reads, "For my birthday this year, I'm asking for donations to Variety Children's Charity of Greater Kansas City. I've chosen this nonprofit because their mission means a lot to me, and I hope you'll consider contributing as a way to celebrate with me. Every little bit will help me reach my goal. I've included information about Variety Children's Charity of Greater Kansas City below."
Also known as Variety KC, the organization is volunteer-driven and committed to providing local children with developmental disabilities the adaptive equipment and opportunities they need for inclusion.
"We're just so honored to be the recipients of it because we help a variety of kids with a variety of special needs, and a lot of times those kids are usually on the sidelines and not included into a lot of different activities into the community," said Deborah Wiebrecht, chief inclusion officer for Variety KC.
Variety KC has worked to build inclusive playgrounds around the Kansas City metro area and bring the first inclusive theater camp to the Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center.
Sybil Silk Wood Nutter Children’s Playground at Children's Mercy Hospital reopened with an inclusive playground for children with special needs. The revamped playground was partly funded by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. His 15 and the Mahomies Foundation donated $15,000.
"I honestly thought it was crazy that she would choose us out of all the charities in Kansas City," said Zach Aubuchon, a Variety KC child. "That just made us all feel special because she chose us, the kids that needed to get out there and just show everyone else that we're just like anyone else."
With one week to go, Randi Mahomes has raised more than $4,500 for Variety KC.
