PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — The sign of peace at many area churches is looking different because of Coronavirus.

A number of churches in the Kansas City area are encouraging members to avoid physical contact to stop the possible spread of any virus.

Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village posted video demonstrating alternative ways to "pass the peace."

At Asbury United Methodist Church, members are being encouraged to avoid physical contact as well.

"The alternative was we talked in our greeting time about how it's ok to do a fist bump or an elbow bump or to wave. And I think people were ok with that and found that helpful," said Pastor Lee Johnson.

Johnson explained he has heard concerns from many of his members.

“People are worried. People are concerned. They follow along on the news and so they share their concern with us. And primarily they’re concerned about our greeting time and do I have to shake hands with somebody.”

Health experts have said as the virus spreads, older people may want to avoid public spaces like church to avoid getting sick from coronavirus.
