KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The last Thursday in June is national Bomb Pop Day, and there’s a Kansas City connection.
Co-inventors Jim Merritt and Doc Abernathy conceived the idea for the Bomb Pop during a drive from Memphis to Kansas City, where Abernathy was being relocated for work.
Officially, the Bomb Pop’s creation is credited as happening July 30, 1995, in Kansas City, Missouri.
National Bomb Pop Day was created in 2005 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sweet, red-white-and-blue treat.
The ice pop — the original includes cherry, lime and blue raspberry sections — has morphed to include more flavors and even some Disney characters through the years.
Sounds perfect for a 100-degree day, huh?
