MISSION, Kan. — No one was injured Friday when an awning collapsed along Shawnee Mission Parkway in Mission.
Crews from the Overland Park Fire Department were called to the 7800 block of Shawnee Mission Parkway shortly after 2 p.m.
The first crews on the scene reported an awning collapsed on the front of a strip mall on the south side of the thoroughfare.
OPFD said in its news release no one was underneath the awning when it collapsed.
Firefighters blocked off the surrounding collapse zone and searched the rubble to be sure there was no one injured. Four vehicles parked in front of the affected businesses were damaged.
Witnesses told fire crews they heard a loud noise then saw the awning fall in front of four businesses at the strip mall.
Overland Park’s Building Safety Division has deemed the structure unsafe until it’s repaired, according to OPFD's release, which will impact six businesses in the vicinity.
The cause of the collapse is unknown at this time.
