A baby orangutan is the newest member of the animal kingdom at the Kansas City Zoo!
Thursday is the second day the unnamed male orangutan has been seen by the public.
The male was bred in captivity at the zoo and is a member of an endangered species. There are only about 60,000 of his kind left in the world.
His mother, Josie, is 14. Zoo staff said she is a first-time mother.
Workers said both baby and mom are doing well. Josie has been very protective and nurturing of the young orangutan. In the time 41 Action News was there, she never put him down.
The zoo said it's not sure how it will pick the baby's name, but it may ask the public to get involved.
The zoo said at some point the orangutan may leave Kansas City for breeding purposes, but that would not happen before he was 10 years old.
