KANSAS CITY, Mo. — While the return to school this fall will look different for many students - even those who return in person - Missouri and Kansas City, Missouri, are continuing a recent tradition.
College student Marissa Jarnagin and her family have treated the tax-free holiday as an annual tradition.
”This is the weekend we always try to go out and save money because having a lot of kids at home, coming from a big family where we could save money, I mean everybody loves to save money," she said.
From 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, to midnight Sunday, Aug. 9, the state and city will waive their respective sales taxes for local shoppers buying back-to-school supplies.
Shopper Eva Bledsoe has her eyes on a computer for her son.
“I’m going to get some electronics because he’s on Zoom all the time, so upgrade that experience for him," she explained.
To accommodate shoppers shifting purchases to online, the sales-tax holiday will also apply to online purchases, though the purchases have to be paid for during the weekend. Consumers can have the items delivered later.
The sales tax exemption is limited to the following goods:
- Clothing – any article having a taxable value of $100 or less
- School supplies – not to exceed $50 per purchase
- Computer software – taxable value of $350 or less
- Personal computers – not to exceed $1,500
- Computer peripheral devices – not to exceed $1,500
- Graphing Calculators - not to exceed $150
