Backpack giveaway serves students in KC metro

and last updated

In the coming weeks summer break will end and students will head back to school all over the metro.

On Sunday, members of the Ohev Sholom congregation spent time and money to make sure those students have what they need on the first day of school. The National Council of Jewish Women sponsors the annual event. It's designed to help women and children get ready for the upcoming school year.

This is the third year of the giveaway that serves children from kindergarten through 5th grade through referrals. This year, 14 social service agencies referred families that needed help with school supplies and clothes.

Carla Oppenheimer is the chairperson of event.  She says everything handed out to the students is brand new.

"Each child is given a package of socks, a package of underwear, a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, hat and gloves, tennis shoes, new winter coat, brand new backpack and all the school supplies for their grade," Oppenheimer said.

The giveaway is sponsored through gifts, donations and grants.
