KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Bates County, Missouri, Sheriff's Department deputy shot a suspect in the shoulder Sunday after the man punched the deputy in the face.
A news release from the Bates Sheriff's Department states a deputy was at his home Sunday evening when he spotted a man acting suspiciously.
The man was in the deputy's driveway.
The man told the deputy he was looking for a gas station and the deputy gave him directions, according to the news release.
Instead of driving to a gas station, the man instead drove to a nearby vacant home.
The deputy notified his dispatchers about the man and was told they had calls about a man vandalizing property, according to the news release.
The deputy watched the man drive off, but followed to give an update on the man's location.
The man confronted the deputy and punched him several times in the face.
The deputy shot the suspect in the shoulder.
Law enforcement officers found the suspect in a nearby field and the man fought with those officers, according to the news release.
The suspect was treated and later released to authorities.
The deputy will need surgery to repair the injuries to his face, according to the news release.
The Cass County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case.
