More than 20 local organizations, groups and community supporters are coming together to help Hickman Mills School District families on Sunday. They are giving away essential items like underwear, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and more with an event called "Because We Care".

Starting at 3 p.m., volunteers will place those items in family's cars at Ruskin High School. You must register for the event online or on site. One of the local pastors that helped put this together said the community has really stepped up to help these families.

"Daily, I am getting phone calls that people are catching this vision and saying how can I be a part and what can I do to help? I know of a man at a store in North KC, he went to Dollar General and bought 400 dollars worth of underwear just to bring for the event," said Rev. Dennis Lester Jr., Senior Pastor at Bethel Family Worship Center.

Essential items are limited but the event will try to help every family that they can. If you register on site, you will be asked to come back at 4 p.m.
