KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Preparations are underway for the painting of Black Lives Matter murals at six locations in Kansas City.
The murals were approved in early August in support of the Black Lives Matter movement as protests continue around the country.
The locations of the murals will include:
- 10th Street and Baltimore Avenue
- 18th Street and Vine Street
- 31st Street and Troost Avenue
- 63rd Street and Troost Avenue
- 63rd Street and Brookside Boulevard
Vivian Bluett will be the lead artist for the mural at 63rd Street and Brookside Boulevard.
“My goal is just for the children to know that, to see that, to be told that, so that when they are adults and they go out into the world that at least a seed that has been planted within them hopefully they won’t forget that,” Bluett said.
The Kansas City artist said this mural will include the African Liberation flag colors of green, red and black.
The mural will be located on Brookside Boulevard between Meyer Boulevard and 63rd Street.
Paul Dorrell owns Leopold Gallery on 63rd Street and welcomes the mural to the neighborhood.
“It will focus more attention on Brookside, but more importantly it will focus attention on a very important and much-needed message and that’s what’s a primary message for me and most of the shop owners here,” Dorrell said.
Painting of the six murals will start at 11 a.m. Saturday. Bluett said she has enough volunteers to help paint the mural, but people are welcomed to come and show their support.
