KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Black-owned restaurants in the Kansas City, Missouri, area will take the spotlight over the next nine days.
Black Restaurant Week begins Friday and lasts through Aug. 2.
Chefs and restaurant owners in Houston started the event about five years ago. This is the first time they’ve expanded the campaign to the Midwest.
Black Restaurant Week encourages people to visit Black-owned restaurants. Eating at the restaurants exposes patrons to Black, African and Caribbean cultures, supports the Buy-Black movement and helps break down stereotypes about African-American cuisine.
“It’s an opportunity to highlight Black businesses in the Kansas City area, and especially patronize those small Black businesses that really need to and want to stay in business, especially during this pandemic,” Gigi Jones explained.
Jones owns Gigi’s Wellness Cafe, a vegan restaurant and juice bar in Old Westport. She is participating in the week-long event.
Organizers are encouraging customers to carry out these orders. They say that is best for public health as COVID-19 cases continue to rise.
