Blue Springs restaurant focuses on organic cooking "like Nana used to make"

A new restaurant in Blue Springs is looking to mix up the way we eat, serving up meals with nothing but fresh and organic ingredients.

"When you walk in you're in Nana's House and you're part of the family," said Alana "Nana" Dennis, owner of Nana's Cafe.

For Dennis, treating customers like family starts in the kitchen.

"The food is to die for, absolutely delicious," said Justin Maldonado, customer.

After 36 years in the food industry, Dennis opened Nana’s Café in Blue Springs, Missouri, a spot dedicated to local farmers and organic meals.

"We are what we eat," said Dennis.

A saying she strongly believes to be true after an organic diet helped her mother survive Stage 4 cancer.

"She had a really good reaction with the chemo, she also had a really good reaction with the radiation, so after about a year we found out that she's completely cancer free and she's remained cancer free for the last 4 years," said Dennis.

Now, Dennis is wanting to help educate others on what it means to be organic.

"We've had several generations now that have not been given the information on how to take care of their food and what the quality of food means to their body, and we really need to get that information out to the communities," said Dennis.

Every dish on the menu is a family recipe cooked up from scratch.

"To cook from ground up," said Dennis.

Maldonado and his family said they have become regular diners at Nana’s Café in hopes the change in diet will help with their health.

"My wife has Addison’s disease and my son has type 1 diabetes so this is a spot that definitely resonates home," said Maldonado.

It’s the type of restaurant like Nana’s Café that many customers say is hard to find, and they’re inspired by Dennis's story.

"To actually find somebody that has done it and has a success story behind it and then has you know, done this on top of it, it definitely makes you feel like this definitely can work and it's definitely going to make a change," said Maldonado.

All of the ingredients used at Nana's Café  come from three local farms in eastern Jackson County.
