Macie Rice, 15, was killed and two others were hurt in a car crash just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Rice was a passenger and according to authorities the sophomore at Blue Springs South High School was not wearing her seatbelt.
Police said the car may have been going too fast along 23rd Street near Possum Hollow and missed a curve. The car then hit several trees before coming to a stop off the roadway.
Hundreds of students, faculty and staff at Blue Springs South High School were devastated when they found out Macie was killed in a crash. Some students were crying in the hallways and comforting one another. Some students left class and went to talk with school counselors.
Jeremiah Vasquez-Gray said he didn't know Macie well, but he remembers that she was a caring person.
"She was funny and knew how to make people smile. It's like very tough for a lot of people and it happened so fast for a lot of people. She was at school yesterday and she's gone," said Jeremiah.
Macie was a manager with the high school football team. One of the players, sophomore Walker Goebel, said Macie always encouraged the players.
"Macie was a person who helped you if you were down. She was a great person," Walker said. "She loved her friends. She made sure that if someone was upset to make sure that they started their day better off the next day."
The driver and another passenger suffered non life-threatening injuries. They were transported to a local hospital after the crash.
Officials said all three were students at Blue Springs South High School.
A GoFundMe page has been set up in Macie's name to help pay for funeral costs.
