KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- A man living in a Kansas City, Kansas, home said one of his roommates ran into their burning house late Sunday night to rescue him, unaware that he was already safe outside the house.

The man who ran into the home died in the fire.

Battalion Chief Morris Letcher with the Kansas City Kansas Fire Department said the investigation into what caused the fire and exactly how the man died is in the early stages.

The department said it will work with the coroner's office to determine the official cause of death. Letcher did not release the deceased man's name or age.

The fire department received a 911 call at 11:55 p.m. Sunday. When firefighters arrived at the house on the corner of 17th Street and Rowland Avenue, they saw smoke and flames coming out of the front of the house, according to Letcher.

The investigation will examine whether the home had working smoke detectors.

Neighbors said they believe the home was split into separate units.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries.
