KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Brides and grooms are frustrated after finding out their wedding venue is suddenly closed for good.
Veronica Morast has 131 days until her big day.
“This is a huge deal to people and they didn’t have the decency to call us," Morast said. "A phone call would have been nice."
She recently learned that her wedding venue, Californos Westport, has closed.
“It was unreal," she said. "I started googling to see if this was real news, then I found your article and saw that it was real news."
41 Action News tried to reach Californos ownership last week, but no one answered the phone.
Reached Monday, the owner told 41 Action News to, “tell the brides to call me to get their money back."
The owner then hung up.
“He says he will mail all the checks out to the brides on June 10," Morast said. "Whether we get that or not, we don’t know."
Couples paid a $1,200 deposit for the venue.
Morast and her fiancé still haven't been able to find another venue for their Oct. 12 wedding date. She spent nearly $500 on invitations that were just put in the mail. The company she ordered them through is called Minted. Morast says they are covering the changes for free.
“I ask if it is going to be any additional cost, she said, 'No, it's going to be OK,'” Morast said.
The owner of Californos told the KC Star, “I wasn’t going to leave them hanging…we did the best we could.”
For Morast, the best they could would have been letting them know instead of hearing it on the news.
“It's not fair that we are finding out days and weeks after they are closed when every minute counts to finding a new venue,” Morast said.
