KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Brookside restaurant voluntarily paid more than $42,000 in back wages to employees after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor.
The Department's Wage and Hour Division announced Friday that Plate Restaurant owed 31 employees a total of $42,534 after being unable to make payroll, which is a violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Department of Labor investigators determined that Plate didn’t have enough money to pay the employees for hours worked during the last pay period after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the restaurant to close its doors to the public.
Federal officials worked with Plate’s owners to find a way to resolve the issue and get the employees the wages they were owed.
41 Action News reached out to Plate for comment.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story said Plate was "forced" to pay the back wages. Plate's owner has since clarified the restaurant paid the money owed voluntarily.
