KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Art will come to life this summer on Independence Avenue. The Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the Independence Avenue Community Improvement District plan to add four more murals along the street.
The project coordinator said murals help maintain a community feel, add identity and make a splash of color in the area. The new murals will be born out of ideas gathered through an online survey of the community.
“We do want it to be meaningful. We do want it to come from the community, to be done by the community. So that way it is something that will be lasting, something that people will stop and wonder and look at,” Jenna Wyrick, project coordinator, said.
As the groups collect information from the online survey, Wyrick told us the three themes leading the way for the murals so far: history of the Avenue, a message relevant to the Avenue, or a scene that reflects the current makeup of the Avenue.
Organizers want community members to be part of the process because they know what will fit best.
“I'm realizing in these one-on-one conversations I'm able to make connections with the community members and I know what they want out of this project. It's not just me winging it, hoping it looks nice. It's going to be really meaningful because it's coming from the community,” Wyrick pointed out.
Three of the four murals should be completed by August 31. The fourth mural, a map marking art pieces and points of interest along Independence Avenue, will be completed in October.
