KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- It was a dream come true for ten young football players as they perused the aisles of Academy Sports in Overland Park on Sunday with a professional athlete by their side.
Kansas City Chiefs Running Back Kareem Hunt took time during the team’s bye week to get to know the young fans and teach them a thing or two about the game.
One of the 10 lucky kids was Jessie Satterfield, whose uncle got him a spot in the once in a lifetime event.
10-year-old Satterfield started playing football for the first time this year and was extremely excited to meet one of his idols.
“This is really really cool,” said Satterfield.
“I’m enjoying myself, just having fun and playing football at the highest level. And now I get to have fun with these kids, I’m excited,” said Hunt.
Each young player was given a hundred dollar gift card.
The boys were supposed to be stocking up on football gear, but they got a little sidetracked as Hunt led them down the Nerf aisle.
Along with pads and gloves, every player too home a new Nerf gun, including Hunt.
The rookie says spending the bye week with friends and family is great, but the opportunity to impact young players is something he just couldn’t pass up.
“I just like having fun with the kids and being able to teach them some of the things I know,” said Hunt.
The pro knows firsthand how important these early years can be for young athletes.
“Pee Wee coaches helping me out telling the right things and leading me in the right direction and my older brother, he just helped me out too a bunch. Just giving me advice when he was playing football and stuff like that,” said Hunt.
Satterfield’s mom, Julie, says she’s hopeful her son will learn a lot from Hunt as he gets started in the sport.
After a tough year for the family, Julie says this day was exactly what they needed.
“I’m grateful,” said Julie Satterfield.
“I’m very thankful,” said Jessie.
After shopping, Hunt held a football camp for the boys to teach them some tips and tricks to help their game.
