MIAMI — The Chiefs' appearance in Super Bowl LIV is something many Chiefs fans have waited a lifetime for, including the main "chief" of Kansas City, Missouri — Mayor Quinton Lucas.
Lucas grew up a Chiefs fan. He vividly remembers watching the Chiefs during the Steve Bono era as a 10-year-old boy.
"I was like, 'How the hell are we going to win a Super Bowl with Steve Bono?'" Lucas told 41 Action News during an on-on-one interview Friday in Miami, where the Chiefs will play the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday for the NFL title.
Lucas remained filled with the same emotions he felt as a 10-year-old fan as he took in the Super Bowl Fan Experiences 25 years later
"I used to be the kid that prayed in church and be like, 'Oh, I hope the Chiefs can win,' and my mom would hit me upside the head and be like, 'You ain't supposed to pray for Chiefs win,'" Lucas said.
Now, he can't imagine what his 10-year-old self would think about being in the position he's in today, seeing his childhood team make it to the big game after ascending to be the big cheese in KCMO.
"It's a thrilling time, an exciting time, and more than anything, I have to pinch myself sometimes," Lucas said.
