Sunday marked one week since a fire destroyed the historic Evangelistic Center Church and it was also the first time the church came together for service. At this point and time, they will meet Sundays at 10:00 a.m. at Neiman Elementary School in Shawnee.

“It felt like a family reunion today I mean I always enjoy church on Sunday but this was a lot more power,” said Merry Highfill who has been a member of the church for the past 16 years.

On Sunday The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and explosives told 41 Action News they still do not know what started the Fire. They do know the fire stared on the Northwest Corner of the church, and has been ruled accidental.

“Our leadership and our congregation are bigger than a building,” said Pastor John Cane.

Cane says it’s unclear when the new church will be built, or if it will be built in the same location on Truman Road in downtown Kansas City.

“We don’t know anything yet because the insurance hasn’t settled everything yet so we don’t know, we have to look at it all and see what we can do and what we are able to do so we just don’t know yet,” said Cane.

Even though the future of the church is unclear, members of Sunday’s service left feeling hopeful for the future.

“I walked away with encouragement, joy unspeakably, that we are moving forward,” said member Sharon Harrington.
