Thousands of metro teens started their summer break Tuesday, and city leaders are trying to find activities for them to do over the summer.

On Saturday, May 21, Kansas City Mayor Sly James will kick off his annual Mayor's Nights Program. The program gives metro teens youth-centered activities to participate in during the summer while the city's summer Entertainment District curfews are in effect.

Kansas City’s more stringent curfew is enforceable from May 27, 2016 to Sept. 25, 2016 and will be supported by increased police presence in the Entertainment District.

The city’s five entertainment districts - the Plaza, Westport, Downtown/Central Business District, 18th and Vine and Zona Rosa - have a special curfew during summer months that requires anyone under 18 to be accompanied by a parent or guardian after 9 p.m. during those summer months

In other parts of the city, for minors 15 and younger, the curfew is set at 10 p.m. For minors ages 16 and 17, the curfew is set at 11 p.m.

The general manager of the Country Club Plaza, Meredith Keeler, released this statement about the curfew:

"The safety of our shoppers, tenants and employees is our top priority. Regardless of the change in curfew, we will continue to work closely with the Kansas City Police Department to ensure Country Club Plaza is safe and enjoyable for everyone at all times."

The Mayor's Nights program will begin on Saturday, May 21 at the Brush Creek Community Center at 3801 Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd. The kickoff runs from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
