UPDATE, 2:30 p.m. | A city spokesperson says six employees will be laid off as part of the re-organization.
EARLIER | The city of Independence is merging two of its departments into the new Municipal Services Department.
The Public Works Department and Water Pollution Control Departments will combine to form the new one.
Development engineering staff from Public Works will transfer to Community Development, which the city says will streamline the development process for businesses and developers.
Water Pollution Control had been part of Public Works in the early 1980s before it was sectioned off.
The city manager said Independence is “preparing for an unknown future.”
