KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Officials in Clay County have asked a circuit court to extend the deadline for when the county has to submit documents requested through a subpoena by Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway's office.

On Monday, the Clay County Circuit Court ruled the county must continue to cooperate with Galloway and submit any documents requested within 10 days.

The ruling means the county would have to submit them by Nov. 2, but the county says it needs more time to come up with a plan to appeal the court's ruling.

"Clay County has the right to appeal the recent Circuit Court decision related to the Missouri State Auditor's authority to access highly confidential records about Clay County’s employees," county officials said in a statement. "However, the court's deadline to turn over the documents in question does not allow for that opportunity, so as allowed by Missouri law, Clay County has simply asked the Court to extend that deadline while Clay County considers an appeal."

The subpoena from Galloway's office came last year after more than 9,000 citizens signed a petition seeking an audit of the county's financial records. The county tried to sue in order to avoid having to cooperate with the audit.

Clay County has filed a motion to amend the judge's recent order.

The county will try to extend the deadline given by the circuit court at a hearing on Friday.
