KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A rescue operation was underway Monday morning at the Children’s Mercy annex after a worker was hit in the head.

The worker was reportedly struck by a crane hauling a load to the eighth floor of the building under construction at 601 E. 22nd St.

Fire crews were called to the scene to assist with the rescue.

The worker was conscious and talking but unable to get down by himself, Kansas City Fire Department Deputy Chief Jimmy Walker said.

Since the elevator does not go to the eighth floor, crews loaded the worker into a basket and lowered him to the sixth floor, where they put him in the elevator, Walker said.

Later Monday morning, the worker was being treated for his injuries at an area hospital. Construction at the site had resumed.
