DE SOTO, Kan. -- A dive team found the body of 40-year-old Rogelio Paredes-Nino, who went missing in the Kansas River Sunday.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office said the incident appears to be an accidental drowning, but an investigation will be completed in the coming days.
Rescue crews spent hours Sunday searching the river for Paredes-Nino.
Emergency crews were called to the boat ramp off of W. 79th St. just before 5 p.m.
A group of people was swimming there when two men got caught up in the current.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, the men had gone deeper into the water to rescue a little girl.
One man was pulled under the water, and the other was pushed against the shoreline. The little girl made it out of the water uninjured.
"The current here can be very misleading. What might appear as a slow current to us, when you actually get in the water, that's when things can change very quick," Northwest Consolidated Fire Chief Todd Maxton explained.
Crews were able to get to the man on the shore and transported him to the hospital. He is in stable condition, but we do not know the extent of his injuries.
As family and friends of Paredes-Nino looked on, personnel from several area fire departments searched the river for hours.
Between a current running about 9 mph, varying depth, and few access points, the Kansas River presented challenges for crews.
"If we have to come down the shoreline between the trees and the steep embankments, it makes it a very difficult body of water to do search and rescue on," Maxton said.

Rescue crews suspended their efforts due to safety concerns once the sun went down. The search continued Monday.
Chief Todd Maxon said the Overland Park dive team found Paredes-Nino's body Monday morning. He was about 150-200 yards away from the ramp.
