LEAWOOD, Kan. -- Customers started lining up two hours before doors opened at a Leawood butcher and smoker, all there to pick up their turkeys in time for Thanksgiving.

The day before Thanksgiving is typically the busiest day at Fritz's Meats and Superior Sausage.

The business bills itself as "Kansas City's oldest smokehouse." Repeat customers said a smoked turkey makes Thanksgiving dinner perfect.

Bertha Packnett said she stayed up all night preparing for Thursday's dinner. Instead of going to bed, she parked her car outside Fritz's at about 6 a.m. She said it's best to be the first in line to avoid the chaos.

"I've seen the entire lot full, people parked at the dry cleaners and at Gates," she said.

With Kansas City feeling its coldest temperatures of the season, the people who showed up early waited in their cars with the heater running.

Packnett dropped her turkey off at Fritz's several days ago for them to smoke it for her. The business also smokes its own turkeys and sells them to the public.
