JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — A 1-year-old girl and a 7-year-old girl died Sunday afternoon in a wreck on I-435 near State Line Road just before 5 p.m.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a semi rear-ended a van that was stopped in the westbound lanes. Two children in the van died. Another two children, ages 9 and 14, and the woman driving were injured.
The two children who survived were taken to Children's Mercy Hospital. The driver of the van and the driver of the semi were taken to Overland Park Regional Hospital for treatment. There were no immediate updates on any of their conditions.
Westbound lanes of the highway were closed at State Line Road overnight into Monday morning. The Highway Patrol said they could remain closed through the early part of the morning commute.
Investigators were working to determine what caused the wreck.
