KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two starving dogs found abandoned at Wayside Waifs animal shelter are on the road to recovery.

According to the shelter, the animals, named Henry and Louie were found Thursday, Jan. 2. They were emaciated and suffering from urine burns, infected sores, and upper respiratory infections.

Chief veterinarian Eric Kelly said the pair's recovery will take longer than most dogs, and the biggest concern is feeding them too fast.

"They haven't had a whole lot of food for a long time, and if you try and give them too much food too quickly it could have disastrous consequences on the body," Kelly said.

Kelly said it will take at least a month or two until the dogs can be adopted.

Wayside Waifs doesn't know who dropped the animals off at the shelter, but officials urge people not to leave animals at their facility.
