KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Dozens of people gathered in the Briarcliff area of the Northland Saturday night in response to tire tracks and white paint covering a Black Lives Matter street mural.

The marks on Harold Smith's artwork near Northwest Briarcliff Parkway and North Mulberry Drive were discovered last weekend. Rachel Hudson, who organized Saturday's event, said they wanted to come out and make themselves feel welcome in the area.

"When we get a permit to do something like this, it's just a sign that this is our safe place, this is the place where we can come, and we're not going to let a racist disturb that," she said.

Attendees danced, celebrated and played music.

"Being black in America every day is a constant protest for us," said Hudson, who represents the Miller Dream organization. "We constantly have to enter ourselves in spaces where we know we're not welcome."

An event will be scheduled to repaint the mural.
