KANSAS CITY, Mo. — When storms move into the Kansas City area, emergency managers spread mottos like “turn around, don’t drown,” and “when thunder roars, go indoors,” but the bottom line of their message is to be prepared.
“With all the warnings and information and news that’s coming for weather systems, there is really no reason to get caught off guard. The best thing to do is be prepared and have situational awareness,” said Captain Will Akin, the director of Clay County’s emergency management division.
Akin warned water is very powerful. Even when rain doesn’t seem strong, don’t underestimate standing water. He said his agency and others work with the National Weather Service and trained storm spotters to keep track of flash floods which can force them to close roads.
Akin’s message is to avoid water in places where you normally wouldn’t find water.
“The consequences are in minimum of six inches of water, you can drown. If you have the kids swimming in a ravine, it’s definitely not a good idea,” Akin said.
If you find yourself in your car with a tornado approaching, Akin suggested driving the opposite way, searching for a building to enter, and avoiding overpasses, which can act as wind tunnels instead of offering protection.
