KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The ex-girlfriend of a man suspected of killing an Overland Park teenager describes him as violent and abusive.
“I carry a lot of guilt about what happened to Mikayla, I know a lot of people are telling me it’s not my fault and not to carry that guilt,” said Bryanna Spencer.
Spencer recently broke up with Kareem McCoy-Lee. Police believe he killed 18-year-old Mikayla Norris sometime after she disappeared Dec. 17.
While police have not confirmed it, Spencer said McCoy-Lee used Norris’s car to try and kill her.
Spencer says he followed her to Liberty after she left her home in Kansas City Tuesday afternoon.

“He pulls up next to me and the next thing I know he’s shooting a gun right through the window,” said Spencer.
Spencer says she sped away, crashing her car in the process.
When she crashed she got out to run for help.
A family member later found a post written by McCoy-Lee on Facebook. The post stated that Spencer and her mother were the intended targets and that the "white girl" had simply gotten in the way.
“I’m hurting so much for her, I’m hurting so much for her and her family,” said Davonna Kirkwood, Spencer’s mother.
Spencer was not hurt in the shooting or the crash, but she is emotional thinking about the innocent girl that got caught in the middle.
“My involvement with someone led to the death of two people. It’s a hard pill to swallow,” said Spencer.
Kirkwood has been in contact with Norris’s family, she is planning to meet with them to share her condolences.
“I’m relieved that my daughter is still alive and that he didn't succeed in taking my life or her life, but I’m very burdened. I’m so heavily burdened by the loss of this other young lady that got caught up in this,” said Kirkwood.
