OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Mike Mosher is an officer who made the ultimate sacrifice, losing his life in the line of duty on May 3.
On Wednesday, hundreds of people lined the city's streets to honor the Overland Park police officer. In that sea of people stood Mosher's students from the Overland Park Police Department's Explorers group.
"Everybody talks about how he was the pinnacle of what it means to be a police officer and he really did show that," said Taylor Crowell, who is in the group and has known Mosher for years.
The fallen officer gave ride-a-longs and shared his knowledge about policing to teens who were interested in law enforcement careers.
"He was always very, very good at teaching us. He was very nice and funny," Crowell said.
The students said he really embodied what it meant to serve and protect.
"He just got so excited every time we would learn something new at Explorers," Crowell said. "He would be so proud of us. He really did show what it meant to be an officer."
They watched and had their hands over their hearts as his family walked past them during the procession. It's not Officer Mosher's death they said they will remember, but the passion he had for serving.
"I want to be an officer for Overland Park," said Naomi Kramer, who also is in the group.
