OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The family of an Overland Park teen who was shot and killed by police took to Facebook Monday to further their case that officers were unwarranted in opening fire on their son.
John Albers, 17, was killed in an officer-involved shooting on Jan. 21 in the driveway of his parent’s south Overland Park home. Officers had been called to the house on a welfare check on a suicidal person.
Although no charges were filed in the case by Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe, the family filed a civil suit last month against the police department and the specific officer who opened fire on John Albers.
Steve and Shelia Albers wrote on Facebook Monday addressing several points of concern they have with Overland Park Police, the specific officer involved in opening fire on their son, and Howe.
“The OPPD, and all departments across the country, need adequate training on how to respond to a crisis intervention call for service,” the family posted. “The citizens of Overland Park deserve leaders who engage with our community honestly, transparently and are committed to the absolute best in politics and training.”
The family said a third video from a neighbor’s doorbell camera has not been released by police. They said that video contradicts the police narrative of the shooting.
The Johnson County District Attorney's Office declined to comment.
An Overland Park spokesman said the city plans to address all questions in court at the appropriate time.
