KANSAS CITY, Mo.— For the family of Carrie Blewett, there are more questions than answers surrounding her July disappearance.

“The last time I heard from her—the 14th—when me and my daughter was at [sic] the Walmart she said ‘momma what are you doing? I’ll be over there in a minute,’” Patricia Blewett, her mother, said.

But the 37-year-old woman never made it.

“Saturday we tried calling her. Sunday her mom tried to call her no answers and all day Sunday, no answer,” Theresa Burris, Blewett’s cousin, said.

They went to the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department to report Blewett missing. The first time, officers did not file a missing persons report, but eventually, two days later, and officer finally did.

KCPD told 41 Action News there wasn’t any information that made detectives believe that Blewett was in any danger.

But then on Aug. 4, police discovered her body at 51st and College.

“They probably couldn’t prevent the death… but we would could have got help right away to find her body,” Burris said.

KCPD said all missing persons reports are taken seriously.

The department did conduct an internal review over why a report wasn’t filed initially. They said they are determined to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

In 2016, there were 1,088 missing persons reports. So far this year,  there are 812.

In recent years the department has revised their policy regarding missing persons, even creating a squad to investigate each case.

“We need answers. She is the mother of four. When I have my child coming to me and asking – her 4-year-old saying, ‘Can I call God to talk to my mom?’ what are we supposed to do about that?” Burris said.

Homicide detectives are searching for Blewett’s killer.

If you know anything about her disappearance or her death you are urged to call KCPD or the KC Crimestoppers Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
