KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It's no surprise that Americans eat the most on Thanksgiving Day, and feeding everyone can be expensive.
How much do you think it costs to feed a family of 10 for Thanksgiving?
The Farm Bureau did a survey and compiled a basic food list. They say on average it costs $62.32 to feed a family of ten.
41 Action News talked to a couple people, and they were skeptical.
"No, I don't think so," one woman said, adding that food prices are high.
"For 10 people? So, that's like maybe one serving. No leftovers, huh? No, we can't do that!" a man said.
41 Action News reporter Sarah Plake grabbed everything on the Farm Bureau's list. She had to make some slight adjustments and picked what she felt would feed 10 people with plenty of leftovers.
At Sunfresh in Westport, the grand total was $102.89.
Around this time, you can normally find some great deals on things like butter, rolls, boxed stuffing, and even the turkey. Plake even spotted a name-brand tub of whipped cream for $0.48, so that went in the cart.
She paid close attention to the best deals at both stores.
At Price Chopper, the generic brand 20-pound turkeys were $0.78 per pound. The Farm Bureau's list calls for a 16-pound turkey, but at that price, Plake figured she might as well go for the big one.
That turkey came out to $15.63, with $18 in savings. The turkey from Sunfresh was name-brand and weighed around 14 pounds, totaling $16.85.
The Farm Bureau's veggie tray only called for carrots & celery - but dip is essential, right? Plake got a pre-made veggie tray, which are actually a little pricey, around $7 to $9.
Their list calls for a four-pound ham, but in most stores you're likely to find hams around seven to eight pounds. So that's what Plake got.
In the end, with a Chopper Shopper card the total came to $97.46.
Overall, if you're really tight with your budget this year, meeting that $62 mark might be difficult, but it can be done.
