UPDATE - A man has been charged in the death of a woman after he allegedly drove drunk and crashed into a building.

Malcolm E. Hawkins, 25, of Kansas City, is charged with DWI, causing a death and driving without a valid license.

According to court documents, Hawkins was driving at a high rate of speed on Southwest Trafficway when he struck the back of a tow truck and spun into a building.

Hawkins was removed from the wreckage by citizens at the scene. His passenger, Diamond M. May, 19, of Kansas City, Mo., was declared dead in the vehicle by first responders.

Police say they noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Hawkins' breath when they came into contact with him. They brought him to a nearby police station, where he submitted a breath test and had a blood-alcohol concentration of .224.

Hawkins is being held in the Jackson County Jail. Prosecutors have requested a bond of $100,000.

Kansas City Police say around 3 a.m. Saturday, a tow truck carrying an SUV was heading north when it was clipped by a Honda. The Honda went flying into the business at 3711 Southwest Trafficway, Fresh Water.

The passenger, a 19-year-old female, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was taken into custody on DUI charges and he sustained minor injuries, officials said. The tow truck driver was not injured.

Neighbors say Fresh Water was fairly new and had only been open a month or two.

Police say northbound Southwest Trafficway will remain closed until the city can clean up the building damage that is partially in the street.
