SHAWNEE, Kan. -- Fire officials on scene at the KC Ice Center and Ice Pavilion said an early morning fire Wednesday ripped through a building detached from the main rink and destroyed a zamboni.
The Shawnee fire marshal said the fire started Wednesday around 4:45 a.m.
Two employees were working on a zamboni in a shed when they heard three explosions. When they got outside and saw the fire, they called for help.
The zamboni was on fire and the shed where it was stored was a total loss. The main center and the ice rink were unaffected.
Investigators said they would work to learn more about the cause of the fire once the sun came up.
The KC Ice Center is located off Johnson Drive west of I-435 in Shawnee.
