CADET, Mo. — A fire that killed a woman and her grandson in a small eastern Missouri county is being investigated as a homicide case, authorities said.

Tammy Thurmond Feverston, 53, and Trevor Cook, 11, were killed in the fire Dec. 7 in Cadet, an unincorporated town in Washington County.

Washington County Sheriff Zach Jacobsen confirmed on Sunday that the Mineral Area Major Case Squad has been activated to investigate the deaths, The Park Hills Daily Journal reported. He did not provide further details.

Firefighters who responded to the fire found the home fully engulfed in flames and were told a woman and her grandson were trapped inside.

Lt. Robert Lang Jr., of the Potosi Fire Department, said firefighters could enter the home only from the back because of the heavy flames, which prevented them from immediately locating the victims, who were at the other end of the home where the fire was the heaviest.
