5 things to know about the upcoming storm

Posted

1. When is the best day for travel and errands?  Today is the best day, as temperatures rise to near 50°.  The rain will not really get going until this early this evening.  Sunday will be windy and cold, but it looks like, based on the new data, it will be dry as we wait for round two.  So, tomorrow will be OK as well, but watch for a few slick spots and it will be windy and cold

2. How much rain will we receive?  Kansas City has the chance to see 2"-4" of rain with 5"-6" possible southeast.  This is rare and odd.  All of December averages 1.53".  June average about 4.50".

3. How much snow will we receive and when does it arrive?  The best chance for snow in KC waits until Monday afternoon.  We could see as little as a dusting/flurries to as much as 2"-4".  It depends on the track of the main storm on Monday. We will not know this until later Sunday or even early Monday.  We will have to take this one day at a time.

4. How much ice will we receive?  First, tonight temperatures will be mostly above freezing, so it will be all rain tonight. Temperatures will drop to near or just below freezing by morning, as the rain is ending.  So, some minor icing is possible from KC northwest by morning.  Also, watch for black ice in any location from remaining water by morning even though the rain will be ending. The main storm arrives Sunday night and Monday.  Temperatures will be critical.  It looks like the KC area will see mostly very heavy rain with temperatures 32-34.  The greater ice potential is across northwest Missouri where temperatures will be at or just below freezing.

5. What is the main take away from all this? This is a complex storm and checking for updates is critical.  It appears the KC area will see mostly rain, but every degree is critical. The best chance of ice would be across northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas Sunday night. The best chance of snow is Monday afternoon. We will have to take this one day at a time.
