KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for portions of eastern Kansas on Tuesday morning.

Wyandotte, Miami, Linn, Leavenworth and Johnson counties are included in the warning, which is in effect until 12:15 p.m.

NWS said radar indicated thunderstorms would bring heavy rain to the area that has already seen between 2 and 4 inches of rain.

Shortly before 9 a.m., NWS said flash flooding was expected to begin soon.

The service said the heavy rainfall would cause small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses to flood, as well as other drainage areas and low-lying spots.

NWS warned residents against driving on flooded streets.

It advised flooding may occur on the following roads:

  • Interstate 70 in Missouri near mile marker 0.
  • Interstate 70 in Kansas between mile markers 410 and 423.
  • Interstate 35 in Missouri near mile marker 0.
  • Interstate 35 in Kansas between mile markers 200 and 235.
  • Interstate 635 between mile markers 0 and 8.
  • Interstate 435 between mile markers 0 and 19, and between mile markers 75 and 83.
  • Kansas Turnpike between mile markers 206 and 226.
