Floodwaters slowly recede in Craig, MO; residents assess damage

CRAIG, Mo. — While a majority of the roads leading into Craig were drying out Monday, floodwaters still cover much of the town.

"I’ve never seen water move so far and come so fast," Mike French, owner of French Tractor Repair, Restoration, & Salvage said. "I’ve been doing this for several years and this is just unbelievable."

He managed to save about a dozen of the 50 tractors on his lot before the Missouri River broke through last week.

French is now using one of the tractors to ferry evacuees to their property.

Across town, Bob Lawson measured 14 inches of water at his shop off Highway 59.

With mud-covered tools, Lawson considers himself lucky.

"It’s going to take some time--get my doors open and let the air blow through and help it dry out," Lawson said.

But the same can't be said for everyone in Craig.

Despite the material goods Jim McCalan has lost, the flood hasn't drowned his a resilient spirit.

"Probably going to come back and rebuild again, only this time I’m probably going to raise it up higher," McCalan said.

Meanwhile, French doesn't plan to come back.

"This is going to cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars and the loss is just not bearable," French said. "I can’t take a chance again, because it’s going to happen again. I’ll bet money that we have flooding again all summer long."
