KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Former Kansas City meteorologist Mike Thompson is Kansas' newest state senator.

Thompson, a republican from Shawnee, was elected to fill the seat vacated by Mary Pilcher-Cook in District 10.

Pilcher-Cook held the seat for 11 years, but announced her retirement in 2019. Her retirement is effective Jan. 16.

The Kansas Republican Precinct Committee voted to appoint Thompson to fill the seat. The newly elected senator plans to run for a full term in November 2020.

Thompson will represent Kansas residents living in Lake Quivira and portions of Bonner Springs, Merriam, Overland Park and Shawnee.
