The Kauffman Foundation Center says it unexpectedly canceled a Planned Parenthood event because of security concerns.
The foundation had planned for months to host Monday's event but suddenly canceled it last Thursday.
The group then informed Planned Parenthood that recent mass shootings had caused them to rethink the event.
The Kauffman Foundation said in a statement its primary concern was safety,
"The events around the country and in Europe during the past several weeks have caused us to look at our policies."
The group said they also became concerned "when notified there might be protesters at the Planned Parenthood meeting."
"Now I think the broader community is feeling what we at Planned Parenthood have been feeling for a longer period of time," said Planned Parenthood of KS & Mid-Missouri CEO Laura McQuade.
The conference, initially slated for the Kauffman Foundation, had to be moved to the Intercontinental Hotel on the Plaza.
On-duty KC police officers lined the front doors of the conference and organizers logged every attendee's ID into the system.
Planned Parenthood still went on with their event; accommodating more than 100 people after the Kauffman Foundation offered to pay all the expenses of the unexpected move.
Organizers say despite the changes, they will continue to live like normal.
"We will be here. We have no choice but to be here. We will learn to adapt as we have in the past and hope to get to a better place," said McQuade.
