Free flu clinics in Kansas City area offered through October

It's already that time of year where flu season is quickly approaching and the CDC recommends it's time to get a flu shot.

"The flu shot is definitely beneficial. The recommendation is anyone over 6 months and older to be vaccinated," Walgreens pharmacist, Jason Bleich said. "The recommendation is not to wait, to get immunized before it gets cold and before flu season actually hits. That way you're prepared for when you come across the virus if you were to come across it."

The Mid America Immunization Coalition has teamed up with Walgreens and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Region VII, where they've hosted free flu clinics for the past few weeks.

On Monday morning, flu clinics were held at the KCK Community College Pioneer Campus in Leavenworth, Kansas.

One student says it was a quick stop shop to get the flu shot.

"Convenience, it's right here at the school," Tiffany Schultz said. "I have two young ones at homes and getting vaccinated is very good because of what they pick up as it is."

The free clinic wasn't just for students, but anyone living in the Leavenworth area over the age of seven.

"As our name says, we are a community college," assistant director for the KCK Pioneer Career Center, Marcia Irvine said. "Many of the people, all the students live here -- I've worked and lived here over 15 years and this is our home and we want it healthy."

The next free clinic will be held at the KCK Community College in Kansas City, Kansas from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday.

The Mother & Child Health Coalition states adults and children can come to the free flu clinics. In Kansas, children must be over seven years old.

In Missouri, children must be over 12 years old.

Administrators with the Mother & Child Coalition says funding comes from the Department of Health and Human Services, being able to provide 3,000 vouchers.
